Exhibition “Baroque Between Rome and Naples” – April 11 / June 20
THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BAROQUE BETWEEN ROME AND NAPLES
Paintings from Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia and the Koelliker Collection
From April 11 to June 20, 2025, we will host the exhibition “The Origin and Development of the Baroque Between Rome and Naples. Paintings from Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia and the Koelliker Collection”, curated by Francesco Petrucci and Don Gianni Citro, organized by the Fondazione Banco di Napoli, Fondazione Meeting del Mare C.R.E.A. (Culture, Religions, and Art) and Fondazione ilCartastorie Museo dell’Archivio Storico del Banco di Napoli.
The exhibition aims to highlight the relationship, in the field of painting, between Rome and Naples, the capitals of European artistic culture during the Baroque period. Many artists active in the city of the Popes moved to the Kingdom of Naples, while others trained in Naples worked in the heart of Catholicism, with a fruitful exchange of experiences and cultural stimuli. Among these artists were Jusepe de Ribera, who trained in Rome before moving to Naples – where he established a school – and Salvator Rosa, who, after his time in Naples, became active in Rome in his later years, where he produced many of his masterpieces. There are many other such examples, including the figure of Sebastiano Conca in the mid-18th century.
For the exhibition, ten paintings from Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, the seat of the Museum of Roman Baroque, and ten from the Koelliker Collection, one of the most prestigious private collections of Italian art formed by the patronage of Milanese entrepreneur Luigi Koelliker, have been selected. The former are from the Roman school, while the latter are from the Neapolitan school.
Among the key figures in the exhibition, in addition to those mentioned, are Pietro da Cortona, Cavalier d’Arpino, Pacecco De Rosa, Luca Giordano, Mattia Preti, and Francesco Solimena.
The exhibition can be visited with an entrance fee of €5. Those visiting the Museum of the Historical Archive of Banco di Napoli are entitled to free access to the exhibition, included in the museum ticket.
