On the thirtieth anniversary of Don Peppe Diana’s death, it is important to look back on his work in the parish of Casal di Principe from multiple perspectives. While his commitment to denouncing the abuses of the Camorra and fighting violence is highlighted more frequently, other aspects of his priesthood are often less explored in studies that emphasize the social and cultural importance of his role in the Casalese community. This contribution aims to focus on the spiritual and theological dimension of Don Peppe Diana’s priesthood, thus offering a comprehensive view of his work in the service of his parishioners and placing his initiatives within the context of pastoral guidance and the teachings of the Gospel

The murder of Don Peppe Diana marked an important turning point in the fight against the organized crime in Campania and led to the emergence of collective movements for rehabilitation in areas affected by Camorra violence. This contribution retraces the events, with a particular focus on those that led to the strengthening of the clans in the Caserta area and the decision to kill a priest. Thirty years after Don Diana’s death, his example remains an essential reference point for the recent history of Southern Italy and for the birth of community projects and experiences capable of fighting the cruelty of the clans.

The story of Don Peppe Diana highlights the courage of the priest, who in Casal di Principe opposed the violence of the organized crime. However, social commitment is not the only dimension of his priesthood. His vocational profile, written at the age of twenty-three, reveals pressing difficulties and doubts, that led him to the decision to undertake the priestly life. Raffaele Sardo’s recent book provides many insights into the theological and philosophical aspects of Don Peppe Diana’s pastoral work. Attention to his neighbour, the care he offers to the most vulnerable people and the faith in the Word and prayer are elements that characterize his experience in the community of Casal di Principe. On the 30th anniversary of his murder, this contribution aims to broaden the perspectives of analysis on don Peppe Diana, tracing his way of living the priesthood also in the relationship with the otherworldly dimensidon of faith.

The priest of Casal di Principe was the first to break the wall of silence and was a point of reference for the local community and the young people, especially in the villages most affected by gang violence. His death led to the launch of redemption processes that are the basis for the creation of an alternative model of development, which focuses on people, rights and humanity and promotes the inclusion of the socially weakest and most marginalized people.

The story of don Peppe Diana is an essential reference for developing strategies to fight the organized crime. Since his assassination on 19th March 1994, community projects have gained ground, capable of redeeming the most marginalized parts of the society in the areas devastated by the Camorra. Raffaele Sardo’s recent novel offers new insights into issues that are still extremely relevant today. A composite portrait of the priest from Casal di Principe emerges: the power of speech and the importance of culture characterized his work. The essential role of women in preserving memory and strengthening the experience of redemption is also highlighted. Thirty years after don Peppe Diana’s death, his story continues to be an example of the daily struggle against all forms of violence and in the spirit of peace and fraternity.

This article focuses on the Nicolini peculiar philological approach on Vico. In fact, Nicolini worked on the biographical reconstruction, which consisted on a re-proposition of Vico’s texts in the perspective of an ascending and improving evolution of his thought. In that approach Nicolini was in accordance with the neo-idealist philosophy of his masters, Croce and Gentile, and shared the political-cultural project of the ‘New Italy’. According to Croce’s view, Nicolini also developed in his work an ethical-political point of view. Thus, he became a historian of the civil
life of the Kingdom of Naples and broadened his field of interest engaging the political-diplomatic history of Europe during the Spanish War of Succession.

The essay offers a contribution to the knowledge of the eighteenth-century studies of Fausto Nicolini and Salvatore Di Giacomo through the reading of the partly unpublished correspondence between them. The protagonists of the respective investigations were Ferdinando Galiani and Giacomo Casanova. Interlocutors of both were Benedetto Croce and Tage Bull, a Danish diplomat included in the international community of Casanova scholars from a young age.

The contribution on Fausto Nicolini is based on the investigation of the papers in the historical archives of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. The text is first and foremost devoted to the requests made to the society for members not resident in Rome to be entitled to missionary treatment; then to the defence of Croce’s idea of the Accademia against the attempt to undermine its statute with the entry of a class of artists, favoured by Giuseppe Ungaretti, among others; finally, to the events surrounding the commemoration of Nicolini, which was to take place almost three years after his death, and the affixing of a commemorative inscription to be placed in Naples, inside Nicolini’s palace.

This contribution offers a reflection on Nicolini, in order to focus on what constitutes a text, across philology, bibliography, and biography: Nicolini was actually a multifaceted and pioneering figure, whose wide-ranging curiosity and expertise were consistently centered on the texts from production to reception. His work anticipates, well ahead of its time, a conception of bibliography open to every type of text, across all media and formats.
